Worst day ever!

So there i was swimming away at the slab we all know and love so well when i suddenly realise i've turned into a big fat girls blouse. Things turned from whooping every wave to bricking my wetsuit thinking that everything is about to go wrong. I was fucked, what am i even doing here! Nothing was different, i'd swam many a time in similar conditions no problems, loving the fear but for some reason all of a sudden a switch went whereby the fear turned from this wicked adrenalin rush to being just down right petrifying. It's crazy how your mindset can change so dramatically, instantaneously and be so completely overwhelming. The sprint out when a set was approaching went from la la la just keep swimming, just keep swimming to SHIT SHIT SHIT I'M NOT GOING TO MAKE IT, OH MY GOD I'M FUCKED WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING HERE. I eventually ended up almost 20 yards further out than Mickey who was sitting on a bloody ski way off on the shoulder. I was as safe as houses but for some reason still freaking out. My head had gone crazy. I managed to calm myself down enough to get through the swim back in but once I was in and settled it took me ages before I could figure out what happened. It's funny how you don't put a time on experience, well i suppose that is until something does it for you, and how trying to control your state of mind can be straight up impossible. On the upside though i love a good challenge, especially when it's against my own personnel limitations, so i'm psyched on getting back out there and being maybe a little bit less of a bitch!

Oh yeah and to make a shit session even worse when i took my camera out of the housing it turned out every shot was out of focus for some reason. Time to put an x through that entire day and move on me thinks!!

Seems like every post I put up here I spend all my time trying to come up with excuses as to why i'm not posting more often. It's depressing thinking back to the last time i actually got into the water with my camera for a session only to realise that it was nearly two months ago. Looking like there might be a bit more action on the way though which is exciting. Below are a few from my last outing way back when in 2011.

For me it's because it fits in quite nicely with my two favorite pastimes, sleeping and watching TV. Isn't it great that it's acceptable again to be straight up lazy. Gone are the summer days when you feel you have to pretend to be motivated about something. Winter is here, nice one, see ya next May!

To be honest, regarding surfing, I haven't really been for the last year or so. Now i'm not talking about the whole photography thing, no doubt i've been amping on that but when it comes to actually paddling out myself i've been unenthused to say the least. I could never come to any great conclusion as to why either, which was the really frustrating part about it. After all the years spending every second thinking about it and every last cent you own on it how can i be "just not all that into it anymore". On a recent trip to Clare, however, my usual petrol contributors flaked on me; no worries, I thought, I'll head up by myself. This turned out to be a rather refreshing plan once I realised i'll be able to take my time at try out a whole host of things, photography wise, that have been knocking around in my head without the hassles that group trips inevitably bring. The day however didn't pan out quite the way I had planned. About half the way through I went for a quick surf. Things went surprisingly well. I am of course in ridiculously good shape, in fact when i popped up for the first time i nearly creased my board. Once up and going everything seemed to click into place and so started shredfest 2011. After a while i began hearing murmurings from the shore and soon enough crowds had gathered to watch, cheering in joy "Pete is back!"

Ok so that's not exactly how it happened, but i did have a wicked good surf which turned into two and then three surfs before the day was out leaving me as amped as ever. Not too sure what this means. It's great fun surfing with your mates and a quality session is always added to if you can share.....blah blah blah

Is it me or is surfing better when you aren't with a group a friends?

Great little trip last weekend with my man Dylan Holland. We surfed a sweet little point which was only about 2-3ft but with nobody else out and the sun beating down us it reminded me why i love surfing so much. Good: weather, friends and surf. you couldn't beat it with a long stick!

I managed to get out and go for surf for the first time in about four months yesterday and man was it alot of fun or what. I somehow remembered how to which was nice and didn't make all to much of a fool of myself, well maybe a little but who cares.

Two nice easy going sessions and i even got time to fire off a few frames in between (see below).

All in all it was close on a perfect day. Good friends and good times!

Had my first snowboarding experience in ireland last wkend. Off snowboarding for a couple hours back down to the car and we were home in 20 minutes. We were going to stop off in the pub on the way back in all our gear, out of instinct more than anything else, but we thought better of it. I don't think we would have been able to get any hot chocolates and rum or Glühwein! Very strange experience but very cool. Gets me thinking about going living somewhere I could do it all the time!

Just a quick note to say happy Christmas to everyone. Got to go for a walk with my camera this morning which i hadn't go to do in a long while. Was good to get out although i am bummed i'm going to miss the best chart in ages tomorrow. There's a foot of snow though in some places up north so i reckon trekking up from Cork is a bit of a no no. Here's hoping Santa comes through with that helicopter so this won't be an issue again!

Anyway happy festivities oh and by the way there's a new Carve and Tonnta out which are filled with ace stuff from the past few months. Go grab yourselves some copies before they're all gone. You'll be blown away Fact!

A lot of good big SW swells came through of late. It was funny cause nobody really knew where to go. There was quite a bit of driving and looking and driving and looking. With waves even in the most sheltered of spots and outer reefs, which i never even knew existed, going crazy it was an interesting few weeks. It was really nice not having to drive for 2-3 hours to get waves for once!

Some crazy heavy beachie sessions with more closeout barrels than one can count and even more pitchings and wipeouts.

It's all fun and games until someone breaks their leg.

I can't believe it's been a month since i last posted up some shots. It has been crazy. I was away down in Biarritz for a while as well as moving house and College is still nuts. Also just back from a trip up north where i hooked up with Cain Kilcullen which was seriously good. Well for an hour and a half anyway! bit of a skunking the rest of the time. More to come on this later. Anyway here are a few shots from the CT down in France. First event i've been too but def not the last.

It’s on its way. The evenings and mornings are getting darker. There is a noticeable chill in the air and soon the morning routine will have to include boiling the kettle to defrost the car. Gone are the summer bbq’s, the pint bottles of bulmers, stupid tag rugby and the annoying holiday goers cluttering up every seaside village and town around the coast. It’s going to be very wet, very cold very windy and very dark but by god it’s going to be fantastic.

I wouldn’t have it any other way!

So it’s time get back to going through the charts hour by hour and the million different wind forecasting sites. Surf trips will now need more of a military like precision and yes we shall all continue to get a shafting more often than not but hey we don’t care cause this is surfing in Ireland and we love it!

Man Ireland sure does test your resolve. I can't remember the last good chart and doesn't look like anything is on the horizon either. I know it makes you appreciate it more when it happens but i'd like to state for the record i would be ok with it firing 24/7. I have enough appreciation for more than a few days a month!

Early Morning Fun

Had a great little early morning trip up to clare during the wk. Another sneaky little summer swell. Man it was great to be on it when it happened though as i hadn't been out in ages. Another pre 5am start but we got there well before the tide and were able to amble down and take our time getting ready, normally it's a mad sprint down and out which quite often means i get something wrong with my settings. I know everything i should do but i get too excited! what can i say. We were even out for about 30-40mins before the ol reliable turned up. It was my first time trying to swim in deep and shoot wide angle at a wave of consequence. I was pretty stoked with how i got on and only took one set on the head and avoided getting sucked over. Unfortunaly i didn't really get the goods that i thought i was getting when i was out there but that has me even more amped to get out and try again.

Big props to the man Dylan Buckley who got into a good run of waves and started charging some monsters with some sweet late take offs.

Here he is on one beaut, he makes it and is rewarded with "the barrel of his life".

As per usual though the sets were dominated by the lidder's which apprently means bodyboarder, it's my new word of the day, thanks paudie ;) . Some ballzy drops and awesome barrels. It's crazy how little they don't make!

Live from the Marquee

OK so not exactly live but i did end up at two shows at the Marquee over the wkend.

First off was Des Bishop on friday night. An alright gig, he was pretty funny at first but went down hill pretty fast to a point where i was wondering how much longer. It seemed as if he was trying to make a hour and a bit long performance out of something that should have been half an hour. On the plus side though i really enjoyed one of his guys on warming up, Michael Mee, very relaxed and very funny! http://www.myspace.com/michaelmeecomedy

We went along to Josh Ritter then on Saturday night and again for me it was the warm up act that was the highlight. This time it was Lisa Hannigan who despite here little house in the prairie apperance was well able get the place going. Only negative was she only did about half an hour and didn't come back out for any kind apperance with Josh Ritter after!

Josh Ritter was good but i think i was expecting more seeming as he had a 24 piece orchastra behing him. Solid but nothing to write home about!

Was one of those strange days of the year when Cork gets all the swell, doesn't happen that often but every Corkonian was there to take advantage. Nothing particulary special about the surf but it was alot of fun and the crappy period meant there was more than enough for everyone.
Unfortunatly the wind had crapped out and swell dropped back by the time i finished surfing so all i have are some landscapey shots.

Unfortunatly that's all i can do at the moment, apart from some onshore slop during the wk i haven't gotten out since my last post. Things begining to get seriously crazy in college, doing all i can to get this damn PhD done. I suppose it's not the worst thing not having surf around, focusing now on finishing up before the winter swells start coming in again.

Anyway here are a few empty shots from the last few months.

First few are from yet again another Clare slab.

Have been trying to get some proper looking out of the barrel shots, these are a bit annoying as it's the frame inbetween which would have been the money shot. Dunno what my camera was doing, it should have shot off at least 2 frames inbetween these i'd have thought.

No crowds are great when you're surfing, not so much photoging. 1 person per wave would be great!

Hot Damn

I mean that in every sense of the word. What a wkend.

Started off with a mixed trip up to clare. Went up thursday night for a full day assault on friday.
I was able to borrow jess's mums car which might just be the best surf vehicle ever. It's an opel zafira which does this amazing magic trick where the two rows of back seats disappear leaving enough room to fully spread out for an awesome nights sleep. As good as any i've had in my VW.

I got in an early surf at cregg (small but fun...ish) before heading up the coast

Including myself there were 5 people pointing there cameras at a pretty large crew of people throwing themselves over the edge. Never seen that many on one spot in ireland before

It wasn't exactly perfect especially on the smaller ones that the surfers where having a go on.

Not the easiest place to surf but you have to gives props to them for throwing themselves into it. Here's Liam Joyce doing just that.

Unfortunately his board didn't quite make it through this but i'm sure he was just glad it was his board and not him that broke. Took the poor guy a further 20 mins to make it the next 30 yards to dry land.

When the bigger ones came through though it sure did show it's perfect side.

A sight to behold

I was on my way back to Lahinch after when i realised i had done the stupidest thing i have done in a very long time. I forgot my board at the upper car park in lahinch that morning after my surf. When i got back it was gone so someone has picked it up. If you know of anyone who found a board on Friday morning bout half 8 or so let me know please. It's a Board Culture 6'1" round tail, all white board. Otherwise there'll be no surfing for pete for a long time :(

The rest of the wkend was taken up by the weather. We are having our summer right now. Forget work get out there and enjoy it.

I also managed to make it out to Roches point for the sunset last night to cap off a sweet wkend. I even forgot about my board til this morning.

I did get to go out and play with some filters that i got last week though.

I was a bit bummed with the sunset, just dropped out of the sky without any dramatic final hurrah. Prob about 2 days in the year when there aren't any clouds around to light up the sky!

Didn't quite turn out as i'd have liked but still stoked on it as i had packed up and was heading home when i saw it, so was kind of like a bonus shot!

Looks like some potential for good surf later in the wk though so hopefully my next post will be of that nature!

Wowzers!

Ok blogging here we go. As this is my inaugural post i'll lay down some guidelines as to what one might expect to see here. I'm not a particularly opinionated person and am not starting this up so i can start ranting and raving about different things that piss me off.

This is simply going to be an outlet for me to put up some recent shots i've taken that i'd like to share and hopefully it will force me out with my camera more so as i have content to keep this going.

Anyway here are some from the very slabalicious county of Clare last week.

This is what i get out of bed at 4 in the morning for.

Here is a less death like one! was weird shooting from dry land. i don't normally as i don't quite have the lens for it (got a loan of paudies for these). I can't argue with the results. I only stayed around for about 20mins and got loads of sweet shots but it just wasn't the same!

Finally one more from the day.

Here is Shane O'Conner on his first ever tow in wave at the cliffs.The first of many many more to come. Nothing too special more sentimental! We won't bust his balls for not stalling for the barrel on his first one. I probably would be already out of frame :)
He got whipped into a few more but nothing "too hectic" according to him!
